God Is With You

Main Text: Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Introduction

Joshua had just taken over the leadership of Israel after the death of Moses. He was not stepping into an easy assignment. He faced an unknown future, powerful enemies, and the responsibility of leading God's people. Yet God did not begin by telling Joshua how strong his army would be or how easy the journey would become. Instead, God gave him one promise that changed everything: "I will be with you."

The greatest blessing God gives His people is not a life without problems—it is His presence in every problem.

1. God's Presence Gives Us Courage

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to obey God even when fear is present.

Joshua may have felt inadequate, but God's presence was greater than Joshua's weakness. Likewise, we all face situations that seem too big for us—family struggles, financial pressure, sickness, uncertainty about the future. God does not always remove those challenges immediately, but He promises that we will never face them alone.

When God is with us, we can move forward in faith instead of being paralyzed by fear.

2. God's Presence Is Constant

Many people think God is only with them when life is going well. But Scripture shows that God walks with His people through every season.

God was with Joseph in prison.
God was with Daniel in the lions' den.
God was with the three Hebrew men in the fiery furnace.
God was with Paul in prison.

God's presence is not determined by our circumstances. Sometimes we experience God's nearness most deeply in our hardest moments.

3. God's Presence Calls Us to Faithfulness

God's promise to Joshua was connected to obedience. Earlier in the chapter, God told Joshua to meditate on His Word and carefully obey it.

God's presence is not an excuse for carelessness; it is an invitation to faithful living. When we know God is with us, we should seek to honor Him in our decisions, words, and actions.

Walking with God means trusting His direction even when we cannot see the whole path.

Application

Ask yourself:

  • What fear am I carrying today?
  • Have I allowed my circumstances to make me forget God's promises?
  • Am I trusting God's presence more than my own strength?

The answer to fear is not greater self-confidence; it is greater confidence in God. If God is with us, we have every reason to hope.

Conclusion

God never promised Joshua an easy road, but He promised His unfailing presence. The same truth encourages believers today. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know who walks with us tomorrow.

When you feel weak, remember: God is with you.
When you feel alone, remember: God is with you.
When the future seems uncertain, remember: God is with you.

His presence is our peace, our courage, and our hope.

Closing Prayer

"Father, thank You for Your promise that You are always with us. Help us not to live in fear but in faith. Give us courage to obey You, confidence to trust You, and peace that comes from knowing Your presence never leaves us. In Jesus' name, Amen."
