Wage War Against Your Three Enemies — The Eye, the Tongue, and the Belly

Introduction

Beloved, every believer is in a battle. Not a battle against flesh and blood, but against the forces that seek to rule our hearts and pull us away from God’s will. Among the most persistent enemies we face daily are not external armies but internal appetites: the eye, the tongue, and the belly. These three can either be servants of righteousness or weapons of destruction depending on who controls them — the Spirit or the flesh.

1. The Eye — Guard What You See

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” — Matthew 6:22

The eye is a gateway to the soul. Sin often enters not through intention but through attention. Eve saw the fruit before she took it (Genesis 3:6). David saw Bathsheba before he sinned (2 Samuel 11:2).

When the eye is undisciplined:

  • It feeds envy
  • It awakens lust
  • It stirs covetousness

“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” — Psalm 101:3

Spiritual Warfare Strategy:
Train your eyes to look toward holiness. Fix your gaze on Christ, not temptation.

2. The Tongue — Master What You Say

“The tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things… it is a fire.” — James 3:5–6

Your tongue can bless or curse, heal or wound, build or destroy. Many spiritual defeats begin with careless words — gossip, lies, anger, criticism.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” — Proverbs 18:21

An uncontrolled tongue reveals an uncontrolled heart.

“If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man.” — James 3:2

Spiritual Warfare Strategy:
Pause before speaking. Pray before responding. Let your words pass three tests:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it kind?
  • Is it necessary?

3. The Belly — Discipline Your Appetites

“Their god is their belly.” — Philippians 3:19

The belly represents physical cravings — not just food, but pleasure, comfort, indulgence, and excess. When appetite rules, spirit weakens.

Esau lost his birthright because of his belly (Genesis 25:29–34). Many lose spiritual authority today for the same reason.

“I discipline my body and keep it under control.” — 1 Corinthians 9:27

Spiritual Warfare Strategy:
Practice fasting, self-control, and moderation. Let your spirit lead and your flesh follow.

Conclusion

The eye, tongue, and belly are not evil by creation — they are tools. But if left unguarded, they become traitors inside the soul. Victory comes when we surrender these members to God daily.

“Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” — Romans 12:1

This is not a one-time battle. It is a daily war. But take heart: the Spirit of God empowers you to win.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father,
We come before You in humility, asking for strength to wage war against the enemies within us. Guard our eyes so they seek purity and truth. Sanctify our tongues so they speak life and grace. Discipline our appetites so our bodies honor You.

Lord, where we have failed, forgive us. Where we are weak, strengthen us. Where we are tempted, deliver us. Fill us with Your Spirit so that our lives reflect Your holiness.

Teach us to walk in victory, to live in obedience, and to glorify You in all we see, all we say, and all we desire.

In Jesus’ mighty name,
Amen.
