Sermon: "Something Greater Than Solomon"
Opening Scripture:
Matthew 12:42
"The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here."
Beloved brothers and sisters,
When we think of King Solomon, we think of wisdom. God blessed him with extraordinary understanding. Kings sought his counsel. The First Temple stood as a testimony to God's presence. His kingdom was filled with wealth, peace, and honor.
Yet centuries later, Jesus stood before the people and declared, "Something greater than Solomon is here."
What a statement!
Jesus was not diminishing Solomon. He was revealing that everything Solomon pointed toward finds its fulfillment in Christ.
Solomon had wisdom. Jesus is wisdom.
Solomon built a temple of stone. Jesus became the living temple where God meets humanity.
Solomon ruled a nation. Jesus is King of kings, whose kingdom has no end.
The Difference Between Wisdom and the Source of Wisdom
Solomon asked God for wisdom, and God gave it to him. But Solomon remained a human being. Despite all his wisdom, he made mistakes. He allowed his heart to drift. His wealth and power could not keep him faithful forever.
Jesus, however, never sinned. His wisdom was perfect because He spoke the Father's words. He did not simply teach the truth—He is the Truth.
The world tells us to gather information. Christ calls us to know Him.
Knowledge can fill the mind.
Jesus transforms the heart.
The Queen Who Traveled
Jesus reminded His listeners about the Queen of Sheba. She traveled a great distance just to hear Solomon's wisdom.
Today we do not have to cross deserts to find God's wisdom.
Christ has come to us.
His Word is available.
His invitation is open.
The question is not whether God has spoken.
The question is whether we are listening.
Where Is Your Treasure?
Jesus also said:
"Not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these."
The flowers bloom for a season, yet God clothes them with beauty.
If God cares for flowers, how much more does He care for you?
Our security is not found in wealth, success, or reputation.
Our peace is found in trusting the One who feeds the birds, clothes the fields, and gave His life for His people.
A Greater King
Solomon's kingdom eventually divided.
His throne became empty.
His temple was destroyed.
But Christ's kingdom cannot be shaken.
His throne is eternal.
His promises never fail.
He is the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep.
He is the Savior who forgives sinners.
He is the risen Lord who conquered death.
Closing Challenge
If people traveled hundreds of miles just to hear Solomon's wisdom, will we make time each day to hear the voice of Christ?
If Solomon's glory amazed the nations, how much more should the glory of the risen Savior capture our hearts?
Do not settle for admiring Jesus from a distance.
Follow Him.
Trust Him.
Obey Him.
For the One who is greater than Solomon is still calling people today:
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, who is greater than Solomon in wisdom, glory, and love. Give us hearts that seek Christ above every earthly treasure. Help us to listen to His voice, trust His promises, and walk faithfully in His ways. May Your Holy Spirit shape us into people who reflect His wisdom and grace. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and King, Amen.
